Have you ever woken up with a stiff neck or sore shoulders? Maybe you had a bad night and kept tossing and turning in bed, unable to find a comfortable position to sleep in?

Perhaps you are a busy mum and experience shoulder pain from carrying your tearful toddler around whilst you try to hoover the living room carpet.

When your neck hurts and shoulders feel heavy and sore, you feel uncomfortable and in pain. Sometimes the pain is so intense; you end up with a niggling headache. In severe cases your neck may even lock, causing you greater pain and discomfort.

When you feel like this, what can you do to ease your pain? How can you get relief and feel better again?

We carry a lot of tension in our joints, especially in our neck and shoulders. Yoga is a perfect form of exercise to help you ease aches and pains in your body. At a yoga class, your Yoga Teacher can teach you easy yoga exercises to practice which release tension and stiffness in your shoulders and neck.

If you are unable to go to a regular yoga class, try the following five simple yoga stretches at home, or at your desk at work. These stretches are so easy-to-do you can do them almost anywhere, sitting down or standing up.

These five yoga stretches will help to release pain, increase flexibility and ease your discomfort. So you can carry-on doing the things you enjoy with ease.

As with any form of exercise, please exercise caution, respect and patience for your body and, consult your GP before embarking on an exercise programme.

Thank you so much for this hub! I've bookmarked it, because I get such bad headaches from staring at the computer screen all day. I thought it was my eyes, but my doctor says it's my neck always looking slightly down, and believe it or not, he suggested I get a neck brace and wear it when on the computer!

I'll definitely try these exercise. You are such a blessing!

A neck brace!! No way (well maybe as a last and I emphasis last resort) there are so many other ways we can repair and align our energy. Pain, as you know, is your body telling you "something isnt quite right." It draws your attention to your body and forces you to stop, breathe and check out what is going on inside. Gentle yoga exercises will definitely help you to be more aware of your posture, how you sit whilst working on the computer; breathing exercises can help to energise you, clear your mind after long stints at work; meditation will to help to give your mind some clear breathing space and harness your creativity - so, you can create more using less energy - therefore, in theory, less time spent sitting at the computer!!

Just listen to your body and see what message she is giving you. Thanks for commenting. Hugs and be well.

Its good to see more and more people practicing yoga. With the economy the way that it is and seeing firsthand the stress that its causing, a lot of people would be better off doing this regimen. Great hub!

this I DEFINITELY need! I've been having cramps in my neck for three weeks now. Just resumed Tai Chi practice after a 9 moon hiatus, thought I'd take a break and find something other than martial arts to do (like learn to fly, which I still haven't), but I guess Fate will take you where you need to go, huh? So now I am back to the martial arts/meditation/yoga world, and not thinking about learning to fly for a short while more...

With budget cuts and layoffs, more and more is expected of us at work and I strained a muscle in my neck putting a CRT monitor on a cart and these gentle yoga stretches are just what I needed to start to heal properly....add some moist heat and Advil and I'm going to be fine...thank you for this information!!!! I also must slow down and focus on what is good at work, outside of work and generally in my life....yoga is a time for me to focus and regroup my thoughts and gain some of the energy I've given away.
